Physical Orientation On the Court Taught Using the OODA Loop Verbal Cues for Volleyball Coaching (Article 7)
Physical orientation meaning where you are before you perform a volleyball skill is often critical to performing the volleyball skill correctly. With spiking where you start your approach to hit is often as important as your approach or your spiking technique. Yet few volleyball coaching models account for how players are taking in stimuli “Reading the Game” and reacting to that stimuli before performing the volleyball skill. The OODA Loop and my Modern Volleyball Coaching Blueprint is different as your physical orientation is constantly being accounted for in my model while performing the volleyball skill.

I would like to share an easy to use and easy understand example of how to OODA Loop your opponent using Hick’s law. This example was used on me initially quite effectively by my good friend Colin Pockock (Age 44) in South Africa who is a former beach volleyball Olympian who took a 9th at the 2004 Olympics. I think he is the best beach player in South Africa volleyball history.

As coaches we can be stubborn, we like to run the same rotations in tight situations, we like to rely on the same hitter when we need a quick point, and we tend to stick to a very specific routine. Why? Because it works. Why? Because if it’s not broken why fix it right? Wrong. Which is why our program upgraded it’s process in the film room, all with the help of Krossover.
This drill features 5 reps each of the players performing the jump float serve. This style and philosophy of coaching is not common but makes allot of sense and should be adopted by more coaches.
This setting drill is final drill in the progression of setting drills and the focus is on decision making and dumping the ball. The players approach from area 4 and then based upon the pass have to decide are they dumping or are they setting. Chris often changes the drills in the series based upon what he see as the setters needs for that week but he always trys to get at least 1 decision making drill into the setter warm up drills.
