Welcome to volleyball coaching nightmares. This programs follows Andor Gyulai for 1 week as he visit volleyball programs around the world with the goal of turning the program from Volleyball Coaching Nightmare into volleyball coaching dreams. This is the first series of 25 videos from Volleyball Coaching Nightmares at Uni High School in Santa Monica from practice 1. The goal of practice 1 is to observe the current coach (Kerri Eich) run the practice and get an idea of her strengths and weaknesses as a coach.

This series of 3 videos follows 2 drills Andor sets up for the players. The drills divide the outsides and liberos on one court to work on serving and passing while on the other court Andor takes the middles and setters to work of movement patterns. This video series is really basic in nature and is designed for players very new to the game. In this case Uni High has several players that have just started playing volleyball, meaning they have played for a year or two, yet they are extremely athletic. This drill works to teach how to be an effective middle player.

Modified on the net pepper volleyball drill with 3 players is a great multi – skill to follow up 90 passes drill. The drill builds on the work players did to imprint good form in the 90 passes drill and now takes that to a more game like situation on the net. The result is players now work on their passing more like what they will see off a serve receive or a free ball.

The 90 Passes skill building warm up drill is a great drill to teach players concentration, while warming them up focusing on the important skill of passing. What the drill is able to accomplish is a high number of reps (90 For each player) in a really short period of time with very specific focuses, while passing from different points on the volleyball court and onto the net.

This series of two videos features Kerri’s team warm up plus her first drill – Overpass hitting drill. This is the first series of videos where we can see Kerri coaching and observe her coaching style and what drills she likes to run and why. Although the drills she runs are not very good in our opinion based upon the skill of the team and what we see as the team goals it is worth watching so that you can later compare what Andor suggest and why by comparison.

Unfortunately it becomes very clear quickly that the level of drills Kerri was running the team at, did not match their skill level and Andor quickly evaluates this while trying to run this first drill.

Andor has taken over practice and has modified the offense drill he was running into a simple exchange drill based upon the skill and ball control of the players. This series of 3 videos is extremely revealing and shows so many important points with regard to good coaching.
In this video Andor and Kerri discuss and review the practice thus far and some of the things Kerri observed watcing Andor coach as well as some things that Andor observed watching Kerri coach.
In this video Kerri takes over practice again and runs a 6 on 6 drill. Andor points out a few things that he thinks Kerri should consider in running the practice in order to make it a little smother and better. This includes adding serving and passing sooner in the practice as well as how Kerri is initiating the plays on the ball.
In this video Andor takes over the drill and makes changes immediately. Andor coaching style, this early in the practice and based upon the needs that he sees is to really be on top of the kids with a ton of verbal cues and correction. Additionally Andor believes in “Raising the expectations,” of everyone on the court and putting players who want to and can perform in a position to do that.
