Volleyball Hitting Techniques

My volleyball hitting techniques leave something to be desired. I know this isn’t the first thing you wanna hear from a professional volleyball player who is writing an informative article on volleyball hitting…but stick with me, I’ve got plenty to say on the subject.

I was never the best at hitting a volleyball on the beach, but I’ve played beach volleyball with some of the best spikers and hitters ever to play the game. Real monster hitters like Mike Lambert, Jeff Nygard, Paul Niapalli, Jake Gibb, Kevin Wong, and Mark Williams just to name a few.

If there is anything that I’ve learned after sharing a court with these guys, it is that the diference between a good volleyball hitter and bad volleyball hitter often boils down to which one of them practices the 6 golden rules of good volleyball hitting techniques.

Volleyball Hitting Techniques- The 6 Golden Rules

1. Position – In this video I show you the correct starting position for beach volleyball. Your starting spiking position in beach is very different than in indoor. For one, indoor your goal is to start outside the court and come in, where as with beach you are often passing the ball more towards the middle of the court. The result is that your technique is not going outside the court in, but rather your aim is to go towards the middle or just a little of center.

2. Approach – As we all know your approach is critical when spiking. In this video I will show you three step and four step approach techniques. Also I will show you how indoor spiking and jumping is different than beach. In beach volleyball you are more focused on jumping up where as indoor it is often about jumping forward.

3. Arm Swing – This is the next important component of good beach volleyball spiking technique. I have been witness to some of the best players with the best volleyball arm swings of this generation, and in this video I try to illustrate some of the things they taught me.

4. Look – Beach volleyball is very different than indoor volleyball in that you only have two people on the court and in all cases only one defender behind the block. The result is that there should be less focus on spiking the ball hard down and more focus on spiking technique by hitting the ball to the open areas. This video includes a drill to help you spot the defender during the hit.

5. Call it out -communicate with your partner to find the open area of the court. Again spiking technique for beach volleyball is different than indoor volleyball so listen for your partner call it out.

6. Emotions! – I am an emotional guy and an emotional player! Use your emotions to control the flow of the game. Get excited when you spike a ball down. Get the crowd into it. Use it to motivate your partner. Use it to take the wind out of your opponents sails!
