Our Best Tool For Helping You As A Parent And Coach!
As a parent, if you are like me you are always looking for tools to help your children become better people who will thrive in the world and live happy lives. This tool is the “Grand Daddy” of them all and we call it Whole Person Growth. ™
Much of the foundation for this concept was first developed by New York Times bestselling book by author Brian Tracey called Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life.
We utilize this tool in volleyball to help High School Head Coaches peak their players for playoffs, but the tool can also be utilized just as effectively to help players develop into people of character.
You see there are three parts that make up a persons character.
#1 “Your self-ideal is the first of three parts of your personality. Your self-ideal is made up of your hopes, dreams, visions, and ideals. Your self-ideal is composed of the virtues, values, and qualities that you most admire in yourself and others. Your self-ideal is the person you would most like to become, if you could be a perfect person in every way. These ideals guide and shape your behavior.” Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life – Brian Tracey
At Volleyball1on1 we describe these self-ideals in volleyball coaching as;
“What Great Looks Like!” ® – The Volleyball1on1 Playing Standard
“What Great Looks Like!” ® – Team Culture and
“What Great Looks Like!” ® – Coaching Standard
For parenting, the self-ideals my wife Vanessa and me have our children strive for include:
1) Effective Communication, 2) Goal Setting, 3) Self-Direction, 4) Critical Thinking, 5) Lifelong Learner, 6) Competitive Spirt, 7) Thriving Under Pressure Tools, 8) Leadership, 10) How To Work In A Team As A Leader Or Member, 11) Empathy, and 12) Tit for Tat Game Theory.
#2 “The second part of your self-concept is your self-image. This is the way you see yourself and think about yourself. It is often called your inner-mirror. It is how you look internally to see how you should behave in particular situations. Because of the power of your self-image you always perform on the outside consistent with the picture you have of yourself on the inside.” Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life – Brian Tracey
#3 The third part of your self-concept is your self-esteem.
“This is the emotional component of your personality, and it is the most important factor in determining how you think, feel and behave. Your level of self-esteem largely determines much of what happens in your life. The more you like yourself, the better you perform at anything you attempt. And by the law of reversibility, the better you perform, the more you like yourself.” Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life – Brian Tracey
Craft An Environment To Recognize Excellence
At Volleyball1on1, we believe it is the job of the High School Head Coach and parent to craft an environment to recognize excellence thus helping players build their confidence and self-esteem so that their self-image reflects the self-ideal we establish.
The result we see at Volleyball1on1 when effectively using these tools with a focus on the correct self-ideal:
We at Volleyball1on1 help you as the High School Head Coach develop excellent, communicative, goal-setting, self-directed, critical thinking lifelong learners who thrive in competition and under pressure, who know how to work as individuals and or with a team as a member or a leader while being fair and considering others.
As a High School Head Coach and / or parent, are you giving your player / child these tools? If not, why not? Whole Person Growth ™ is taught at all our 3 1/2 Day Volleyball1on1 Summer Camps!
