Volleyball How To: Beach Volleyball Setting

beach volleyball settingVolleyball setting is a crucial part of every volleyball team, and a good setter can be the deciding factor that determines whether you win or not.

Hi Everyone, Steve Anderson here with five more instructional videos dedicated to helping you develop your volleyball setting.

I’m an Olympic gold and bronze medalist coach in 2000 and 1996 with the Australian women’s beach team and coach of the FIVB co-team of the decade 1990-2000. In addition to playing in the AVP tour myself, I have also coached both indoor and outdoor volleyball for the past 20 years. Volleyball is both my passion and profession, and I enjoy teaching people how to play it as much as i enjoy playing it…so let’s get started.

A volleyball player with good setting skills can set you up for a sideout every time. Good setting skill only comes through constant setting drills and practice, and it is not as easy as it looks to be a good setter.

Beach Volleyball Setting – Illegal vs. Legal (Video 1)

A great many people are curious about what exactly makes a volleyball set illegal…it’s a question I get very often. The answer is very simple, A legal set requires that the ball never coming to a complete stop in its movement. From the moment the ball makes contact with your fingers to the split second you snap it back into the air, the ball must never cease to be moving.

Beach Volleyball Setting – Position (Video 2)

When you are waiting to receive the ball for a set, create symmetry and get nice and relaxed. Keep your arms loose and at your sides at a ninety degree angle to your body…this is the rest position for a setter. Anytime you are on the court you should in this nice and relaxed ready position. Your hands should be simulating receiving the ball as they rest at your sides, and all you have to do to set the ball is bring em up above your head and make contact. Be sure to stay relaxed, stiffening up and rigidly grabbing the ball will set you up for failure.

Beach Volleyball Setting – Stepping into the Loaded Position (Video 3)

A great deal of your power from a set comes from your footwork. Practice your moves in the sand as you come up to the net for a set, stay loose with your arms in the ready position and step into the loaded position. Once you make contact, spring up and use your legs to finish the set. Remembering to come into your position down low in the loaded position is key, if you step up to the net fully extended then you are gonna have to crouch after making contact and you will lose time and momentum. A great way to practice this technique is by utilizing the triangle drill.

Beach Volleyball Setting – Timing and Positioning (Video 4)

As soon as the ball is served and before it crosses the net you know which one of you the ball is coming to. Immediately, the passer and the setter should move into their respective roles. The passer should set up for a bump and the setter should release and come in for a set. A good drill for a setter to use that will help with the development of the footwork and timing necessary for this is called “one, two…hesitate…one two” use it to practice your timing and your footwork simultaneously.

Beach Volleyball Setting – Under Pressure (Video 5)

All these steps that I have gone over today are useful in learning the footwork timing and positioning necessary to make a set…but the true test of a volleyball setter’s ability is having them do it in a real world scenario. All too often, well practiced and rehearsed moves and abilities can fall apart when some pressure is added. You don’t want all your hard work to be for nothing, so make sure that you practice the things you’ve learned in as real a situation as is humanly possible before game day.

Volleyball Setting

Always keep the essentials in mind when setting a volleyball

  • The Ready Position - Before you make contact with the ball be relaxed and ready with you arms at a ninety degree angle…nice and loose
  • Footwork is Key - Know your steps and your role on the court. Developing proper footwork and timing is the key to a good set
  • The Loaded Position - Use your legs to set the ball, make a nice fluid movement with your whole body to keep the ball in constant motion.

Volleyball setting is an absolutely fundamental skill to learn if you aspire to be a solid volleyball player. And the best way to develop good volleyball setting skills into great setting skills is with the techniques and practice methods that I just showed you.

Thanks for your time,
Steve Anderson
