Volleyball Pepper Tips Explained
Anyone who has ever been on a volleyball team or involved in a volleyball club knows what pepper means when you’re talking about volleyball. Pepper is a practice drill where you have a partner and you pass, set, and hit back and forth. It is important to do this drill correctly and with energy, because this drill is very valuable. If you pepper with intensity you will play with intensity.
When you pass the ball to your partner, you shouldn’t be waiting around casually, get low and be prepared to receive the ball back to hit. In my experience watching people pepper, when the ball is hit out of reach, I witness one partner waiting around while the other partner chases the shanked ball.
That doesn’t help anyone, and the person who shanked the ball shouldn’t be rewarded with a short break. It is important for both players to chase the ball and continue to pepper wherever the ball lands if space permits. Of course if you are doing this drill before a game and have limited space splitting a court with the other team this aspect of the drill would not be a good idea.
