Volleyball Middle Spiking, Learning Middle Spiking with Jeff Nygaard

volleyball middle spikingLearning volleyball middle spiking 3 time Olympian and AVP pro Jeff Nygaard.

Hi, I’m Jeff Nygaard, I originally played college ball at UCLA garnering two player of the year awards and two NCAA Championships. In between my junior and senior year I helped Team USA win the bronze medal at the ’94 World Championships.

After graduation I represented the US three times in the Olympics. Twice indoors, first at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic games and then in the 2000 Sydney games. My third appearance was on the beach in 2004 in Athens. Off the hard-court, I have collected eight wins on the AVP and FIVB tours.

Today I’m demonstrating how volleyball middle spiking is important from the middle position and primarily how to be deceptive and beat the blocker to the punch.

Volleyball Middle Spiking – The Gap (Video 1)

The Gap is a spike between area two and area three. It’s always in the same spot no matter where the setter is. When you approach and jump from the middle position keep your hips perpendicular with the net to have power and range to all angles of the court. An extra technique for right handed hitters; you can pick the ball off early or let it go across your body for the cross-body hit. This set forces the blockers to move which opens up more attack angles on the court.

Volleyball Middle Spiking – The 3 (Video 2)

The 3 is a spike the middle hits that is always the same distance away from the setter. The technique is the volleyball is always set six feet away from the setter.

Volleyball Middle Spiking – The Slide (Video 3)

The slide is also relational to where the setter is. With this technique, you jump at an angle from the middle position right to left away from the setter. You are able to slide past the blocker for the open hit.

Volleyball Middle Spiking – The Push (Video 4)

The push is a technique similar to the slide in distance from the hitter. It’s good for when you are in trouble and cannot spike a front 1 ball. You can call a push to have the volleyball pushed out a little farther for the attack.

Volleyball Middle Spiking – Back Slide (Video 5)

The back slide goes behind the setter and past the back 1 to hit the volleyball left to right. The back slide is more advanced and should be learned after first learning how to hit other middle sets.

Volleyball Middle Spiking – Audibilize (Video 6)

Audibilizing is good to get out of trouble. Use this technique when the pass is off the net and you cannot hit a middle spike. Call for a gap or a better set for your situation.
