These volleyball defense videos are perfect tools for learning how to play great defense on the beach.
Hi, my name is Anthony Medel and I am an AVP professional and voted one of the most dynamic defenders on tour. Also I’m a coach at the Mizuno Long Beach volleyball club.
Originally I am from Santa Barbara, California where I earned All-Channel league honors as a high school senior at San Marcos High. On the beach I won my first tournament at the age of 16! I give a special thanks for all my accomplishments to my high school coach who trained and inspired me to go far.

Volleyball Defense Videos- Location
When playing defense on the beach it is important to be prepared for anything. Do not simply sit back and watch the serve, you must get into your defensive position and be prepared to react appropriately to the serve. Stay relaxed and ready, if you become too tense your body will not be ready to react to the serve.
Volleyball Defense Videos- Body Positioning
Body positioning is very important in beach volleyball, you want to make sure that your head, and shoulders, hands and feet are all ready and positioned to react to the ball. Staying relaxed is key to reacting to the serve. Your head should be upright and watching the attackers with your shoulders back. Remember to keep your body central, your hands should not be too high or too low and your feet should be shoulder length apart ready to dig the ball from any direction.
Volleyball Defense Videos- Anticipate
Anticipation is key. You must recognize who your opponents are and anticipate what they are going to do and their playing type. Your first step is key when playing defense. I recommend a big crossover step allowing you to cover maximum space in minimum time. Anticipating the next move of your opponents will allow you to be prepared for anything.
Volleyball Defense Videos- Cut Shot
When playing a cut shot you must always keep your defensive position. Pay attention to how close you are to the net so that you can keep track of how much space you have. I recommend a technique called, “Turn N’ Burn”, this is a technique that I use to get off the net and into position to attack the ball.
Volleyball Defense Videos- Communication
Always communicate with your blocker. That is beyond important, you cannot win a game of beach volleyball without having communication with your partner on the court. You must let your blocker know where the ball is and where to position the set so you can make the kill.
Volleyball Defense Videos- Detonation
After you have played dynamic defense you must prepare yourself to put the ball away and score a point. The most important part after playing defense is turning around and going on offense. You want to hit and watch the ball detonate into the sand for the kill.
Learning how to play defense for beach volleyball is very important. You can play an awesome game of offense making every kill, but unless you can play that same awesome game of defense you cannot win a match.
