Originally from Santa Barbara, California I earned the All-Channel league honors as a high school senior at San Marcos High School as one of the top attackers. I participated in my first tournament at age 16 and have been playing since I was a child. The perfect jump start comes from practice, after all practice makes perfect.

Jump Serving Tips- Prepare
One of the most important aspects of jump serving is the preparation. Something that I always make sure to do before I initiate my jump serve is to flatten the surface where I will be jumping up. You will want to give yourself ample space behind the inline to ensure you do not footfault. A great toss in front of you is necessary to perfecting your jump start. Like previously stated practice makes perfect with volleyball drills beginners, and pros. So whenever you have free time don’t hesitate to get to a volleyball court and practice your jump serve.
Jump Serving Tips- Elements
Always serve for the situation. Take into account your surroundings, make a mental note of what the weather is like and the positioning of the sun. Butch May once told me that on the first serve to only give 85% of effort into it because once I am going as hard as I can I have a greater chance of missing.
Jump Serving Tips- Spin
The toss leading up to your serve is very important. The more spin you have on your toss the more velocity the ball will have crossing the net. A good toss will enable you to have a good jump, which will result in a good serve. The spin of the ball is one of the most important aspects of your jump serve.
Jump Serving Tips-Elongate
Always remember to make sure that all of your movement is smooth and on key. When preparing to do a jump serve make sure your arms, chest, and shoulders are flexible and warm. You will want to reach high and snap through using your core when making contact with the ball.
Jump Serving Tips- Corrections
Jump serving is a difficult serve so it is natural to have a few mishaps happen when preparing to make contact with the ball. For example, if you have a bad toss you will have to find a way to correct it so that when you do make contact, your serve goes flying over the net and into the open space. When correcting a toss always make sure you locate the ball, snap your wrist and follow through.
Jump Serving Tips- Next step
After you have hit the ball make sure to get right back into the game and prepare for defense. One mistake that I made early on in my career was I had the tendency to stop and watch my serve after I had hit the ball. That one mistake caused my whole team problems when trying to transition back into defense.
Being able to master your jump serve will open up many doors for you in the world of volleyball. Always remember that practice makes perfect so get out there and practice practice practice!
