Volleyball coaching is an art form. It’s all about communication and creatively conveying ideas and strategies to your players to facilitate good teamwork as well as individual achievement. I’ve had many good coaches, and the essential tips I have learned from them over the years has helped me immensely with my career, and today I am going to share some of them with you!
Hi! I’m Logan Tom, three time Olympian as well as co-captain for the upcoming London Olympic games in 2012. I started playing on the US National team when I was 15 years old and also won a national championship at Stanford being named an all American. In the Beijing Olympics I was the overall points leader for women.

Volleyball Coaching – Rebounding
The first tip that has stuck with me over the years is how important rebounding is. Getting a second chance to play the ball over is critical. This is more usual with shorter teams but playing the ball off the block allows you to get a second swing at the ball.
Volleyball Coaching – Back to the Basics
One of the most important tips I use during close matches is about the basics. Drills that you practice hours and hours a day allows you to be comfortable in close matches because you have done this many times before.
Volleyball Coaching – Less is More
This tip is huge, especially when I am tired. Coaches have told me that there isn’t just one way to accomplish a goal. You can beat a block rather than overpower a block, quicker arm movements instead of jumping really high, all these alternatives could be useful if you are extremely tired.
Volleyball Coaching – Don’t Dwell on the Past
When playing in a game, if you mess up, don’t beat yourself up on it because it can affect your next play. Forget about the past and move on, just tell yourself “next play” after every play.
Volleyball Coaching – Mind Over Matter
This tip is not the easiest to follow through with. This involves putting your body through hours of training and pushing yourself to a different level through your mind. Your body may think it can’t go on but your mind can tell it to keep going. This is not something you should do all the time but when it is important.
