Hi, I’m Lauren Fendrick, top ten AVP player, top twenty FIVB player and four year starter as an outside hitter at UCLA.
Today I am going to share my secrets on beach volleyball communication. Knowing what and when to say something is crucial in scoring points and wins.

Volleyball Communication – Before
Before each match and before each play have a system in place. Talk about the opponents tendencies and your defense.
Volleyball Communication – During
During the play use all four eyes on the court. Things to not say are “tight set” as this tips off the defense. Things to communicate are if the ball is in or out, where the open court is, and most vital “nobody!!”
Volleyball Communication – Triangle
Think of each play as an equilateral triangle. The tip of each point is the pass, the set and the hit. Keep this in mind no matter where the play is.
Volleyball Communication – Help
How do you help and communicate better when your partner is struggling? Start by giving a good early call and make sure the set is good. Next switch sides of the court, go on two and always be a cheerleader.
Volleyball Communication – Balance
This type of balance is communicating how you are defending to fill the court. If the wind is at your back you have more virtual court to cover and always watch the hitter.
Volleyball Communication – Transition setting
In transition a player will need more time to make the play. Make the set higher and communicate where the open court is to the hitter by calling it out.
