Volleyball blocking is like any technical skill, it begins as a plan of action in your head that is then put into practice by your body. Once you have a clear picture in your mind of what you want to achieve with a volleyball block and how to do it, then you can start developing the technique around it.
Hi Everyone, Steve Anderson here, Olympic Gold Medal winning volleyball coach for the women’s Australian Olympic volleyball team in Sydney Australia in 2000, and a bronze medal wining coach in Atlanta in 1996.
What Is Volleyball Blocking?
The first thing you want to teach beginner players is what volleyball blocking really is:
- I like to use a process where I try to walk past them and then I tell them to block me. Almost 100% of the time they get in my way. They meet me on my plane and stand there. This is a natural instinct. Instead of actively trying to block me, almost all players simply meet me on my plane and do their best to stop me, this is wrong.
- The next exercise I like to utilize when coaching volleyball blocking is to have my players grab me as I walk past them. This is a great way to emphasize the need for them to penetrate and get into the block. We don’t want volleyball blocking to be a passive exercise, we want our players to get in there and control the ball with their block.
Volleyball Blocking Mindset
This is the foundation I always want to build off of when I teach players beach volleyball blocking, Beginner blocking tips I want them to put an emphasis on is blocking as an active job, not something you do as a reaction to the other team’s movement. This mindset is one you have to be consciously aware of before taking your game to the next level.
