Three Common Mistakes to Avoid in Volleyball

Today I am going to tell you the three most commonly made mistakes in indoor volleyball and how to correct them. The first mistake I see happen more often then not happens when serving. You go up and nail the first two serves perfectly scoring. The third time you become more relaxed mentally and miss the serve. In order to correct this, Randy Stoklos once told me, tell the server he/she is going to miss the third serve. Nine out of Ten times the server will go back and serve that ball in just to prove you wrong.

Another common mistake that coaches get on their teams backs for is forgetting to cover. Covering is like brushing your teeth, its something you have to do every single time. If you get lazy and don’t cover, the other team blocks the ball and gets momentum.

In order to fix this mistake you should designate a team captain to get everyone to cover. Another way is to have a bribe, the person who covers the most balls gets a prize. Everyone loves some motivation and prizes.

The last mistake I see often is when a team plays down to the level of their opponents. When you see an opponent that you can easily beat it is hard to stay focused mentally. There is a couple ways to fix this, one is to remember that you represent yourself and your team, and its not fair to the other team to go easy on them. Your doing a disservice to your opponent to play easy on them and its unsportsmanlike. If your opponent is too easy, challenge yourself by trying to play a different position, and try new things to practice against them, but don’t play easy on anyone.
