Knowing the volleyball spike better then your opponent is satisfying and imperative to the goal of winning. Hello, my name is Anthony Medel and I am a ten year professional volleyball player and have played in two finals in the AVP tour. For the past five years I have been in the top five in aces and kills. What made these accomplishments possible I give a special thanks is due to my high school volleyball coach who inspired me to be great and play great.
I have been playing volleyball since I was a child, and won my first tournament at the age of 16. Originally from Santa Barbara, California I earned the All-Channel league honors as a high school senior at San Marcos High. There at a young age I learned a great volleyball player is made out of great training.

The Volleyball Spike – Call It
Video 1 explains when playing volleyball with a team or partner it is very important that you get in the habit of calling the ball with words such as “me” or “mine”. After you pass the ball to your teammate remember to move with out the ball and anticipate where the ball will be next. The purpose of moving with out the ball is to be in position to receive the pass. When hitting you must get into a ready position, this means knees bent and arms ready.
The Volleyball Spike – Pop up
Video 2 is about spiking a volleyball better than your opponent’s starts with locating where the set will be. You must picture where the set will land so that your feet will be in position directly under the ball. The most important aspect of the volleyball spike is you must never rush the set! Many professionals still make the mistake of rushing the set and it never ends well. Remember to take the first step as left, right, left, leaving you ready to jump up and spike it down!
The Volleyball Spike – Rush the Set
Video 3 explains that you should never go in too early for a set. Rushing the set is one of the biggest mistakes you can make when preparing the volleyball spike. If you rush the set the ball will be behind you making it virtually impossible to spike the ball over the net. If you do rush the set many volleyball players take comfort in knowing that your partner will communicate in letting you know that you are in front of the volleyball. It is important that you follow “feet to ball”, which indicates that your feet are directly under the ball giving you the best opportunity to jump up and spike hard over the net.
The Volleyball Spike – Position
In video 4 I show why running up to get into position for the volleyball spike hard try and remember staying wide to the ball is important. Come in hard and fast with a big first step. As your right foot is coming down throw your arms back, and as you step with your left foot throw your arms up giving you an opportunity to jump higher and smash the ball down over the net. You want to try and create a high contact point which will enable you to have more power behind your hit.
The Volleyball Spike – Come in hard
In video 5 I explain that you should always come in hard for the volleyball spike, every time! Do not rush the set, give yourself space between yourself, the net, your partner and give yourself time to jump up and crack the ball. Come in hard, smash the ball and get a kill!
The Volleyball Spike – Vision or Court Check
In video 6 I will show you why it is important to court check after you take your approach. A court check is the ability to take your eyes off the ball before you strike and see where the open spots are. One you know where the open space is, locate the ball, jump up, and put the volleyball away. And remember to always communicate; an effective court check can not happen smoothly if your teammates are not indicating to you where the volleyball is.
Learning the volleyball spike better than the people you are competing against will come in handy when on the court. Remember to practice not only your skills but your communication with your teammates ensuring there are minimum errors during the game.
