In beach volleyball blocking into the angle it increases your defensive range. By covering more of the court you appear to be everywhere and frustrate your opponent. Pulling into the angle like all other volleyball skills takes work and drills to be a dominant defensive player!
Hi, I’m Adriano Ticao. Coach to top AVP and FIVB teams, I am here today to teach you beach volleyball blocking for beginners.
For players and coaches to train for pulling into the angle requires you prepare first, then read the position of the set. This technique and my video drill series will show you training methods I have learned coaching at the highest level to help you become a defensive machine.
Beach Volleyball Blocking for Beginners, Angle – Prepare
To approach for the blocking position start in the middle of the court and use a cross over step to move laterally in front of the hitter. When you are there line up in front of the opponents hitting shoulder.
Beach Volleyball Blocking for Beginners, Angle – Position
Make sure you are in the right position. The right position is in front of the hitter’s shoulder. Follow the hitter wherever they go by moving laterally.
Beach Volleyball Blocking for Beginners, Angle – Hands
Now that we are in front of the hitter, where do you put your hands? Let’s say you are on the right side of the court and are jumping to your left into the angle. As you jump, have your right hand on the ball and your left hand drops farther into the angle. If you are on the left side of the court, do the opposite.
Beach Volleyball Blocking for Beginners, Angle – Timing
For your jump you have to be almost at your peak when the opponent contacts the ball. If you are already coming down when they hit the ball, that means the ball will go over you, or come down with you on your side of the net.
Beach Volleyball Blocking for Beginners, Angle – Ready for the Jump
After you’ve moved in front of the hitter always be in the squat position. This means you are ready to explode up at any time. If the set is to the outside move to the outside, but always stay in the squat position.
Beach Volleyball Blocking for Beginners, Angle – Summary
Now we summarize our drill. This is your checklist. Start in the middle. Move laterally and stop in front of the opponents hitting shoulder. Jump so you are almost at the top of your jump when the hitter spikes the ball. Keep your outside hand on top of the ball. Keep your inside hand farther into the angle.
